1 of my friends has been out of school 4 nearly 3 months w/ severe depression. she is perhaps 1 of the funniest and outgoing people i know; the sort who grabs life w/ both hands. the depression set in very unexpectedly w/ no known cause and she has had 2 leave school and study w/ a tutor because being in school was causing her 2 much stress. please pray 4 rachel. this is not something that some1 like her deserves.

What's going on with her health?
Stress can make our bodies sick and then the mind because depressed. Do they know if it's physical?

she had been out w/ flu recently and suspect that w/ that and having 2 make up all the work she missed (this was around midterms), it may have just been 2 much 4 her, but there's no sure way 2 tell.

the cause 4 this is still unknown and has been mostly attributed to the stress of the hell that is junior year. she is doing better than b4, but any xtra stress and she regresses a bit. this week being finals, she's really under pressure, especially since she's had a tutor 2 study w/ instead of the regular course teachers. they do expect that once school lets out, she'll do much better with no pressures and spending time w/ friends and family. another thing that's been helping her is music. she was 2nd chair in the viola section of r string emsemble. she's been playing more often than usual 2 keep her mind off her depression and we've played a few duets 2gether and i've definately noticed a relaxing change in her when she plays. so she is getting better, but i think finals may have knocked her down again 4 a little while, but summer break should b good 4 her. i'm hoping that this will b her last serious down and that once the pressure is off, it will b mostly uphill. i don't kno much more about her status aside from summer being an ideal time 4 rebound.

Have you or her family considered some music therapy of some type? Sounds like this might be away to go since she seems to relax when you play together. My thoughts are with youand your friend dear. Let me know if i can help.

I wish your friend the best of luck. The music therapy suggestion seems to be the best idea so far. I understand the dangers of stress and depression, but I would venture to say that she may need more than just the music therapy. Perhaps there was some incident that triggered these episodes, as I gather from your post that until recently, she was a completely different person. I would think that anyone who seemed as strong as you describe her to be, wouldn't "break" so easily I think, unless something else is happening that we are not privy to...? Please, let me add myself to SR's list, and offer myself as a sounding board if needed. I know that we wish we could do more for her, and we will be here for you any time you need.
