SPECIAL TO THE TIMES
EAST TAWAS - Tourists may not be the only people roaming around the Tawas Point Lighthouse.
"There has been a story around for years about the young girl, who some say they have seen sitting by the tower steps, late at night," said Chuck Allen, Tawas Point State Park recreation supervisor. "I have never actually seen her, but I catch myself looking when I drive out here late at night."
According to Frederick Stonehouse, author of the book "Haunted Lakes II," the ghost of a young girl dressed in pink has been seen at the Tawas Lighthouse. The girl is believed to be the daughter of one of the lighthouse keepers. She supposedly died of pneumonia in the late 1800s.

Bob Cichocki, a former U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary historian who served as the lighthouse keeper and tour guide from 1995 until 1999, said he has heard of numerous sightings of the mysterious girl.
In 1998 two Coast Guard engineers from Coast Guard Group Detroit were in the basement performing an annual inspection when they heard what they thought was a little girl's voice, said Cichocki.
"They went outside to see what the child was doing, but found nothing," he said.
When the men went back inside, they heard the girl again. That was enough to spook one of the men for good.
"(He) refused to enter the building after that incident," Cichocki said.
Cichocki said the ghost has been seen sitting on the concrete steps of the house or looking out the back windows.
"There have even been reports of lights on in the basement and upstairs windows during the night when the lighthouse has been locked up."
