The Universe is made up of sound, and with this sound we have the power to correct and heal our life force centers better known as the chakras.
These vibrations can correct our mind and body so we can connect to the One while in meditation. So, when one is chanting a mantra, you are creating a vibration that is resonating with the sound of the Universe and your body responds to that sound realigning itself. So, when you sound the OM, the whole body reverberates with the sound of the Universe. It is very powerful. The Hindu's and Buddhist believe that the word Om is the sound of the universe.
Now what is most beneficial to you is to pronouncing the mantra as the Hindu/Buddhist written version, not the English translation. There is a certain oral formula that takes place in the inflections as they are spoken. This is what truly invokes the magic of the mantra.
A friend of mine taught me this one.

(This link takes you to a site which gives you an audio sound of what the mantra sounds like.)
(ohm) (mah) (nee) (pahd) (may) (Hum)
Bhagavan Das described Om Mani Padme Hum as given to him by Lama Kalu; "Now all the powerful light of essential nature; now all powerful is the light of the lotus." The sound "Hum" actually awakens the kundalini.
There are many forms of mantras... Yoga International features a mantra every month in their yiextra.

I'll post more on mantras as I go.
