The name - Honey - comes from ancient Hebrew, and means "enchant". Most everyone knows that honey is used often as a sweetener, either called for in recipies, or as a replacement for processed sugars. However, it is also known for its healing properties as well, and can be used a number of ways.
Referred to as "apitherapy, it includes the replenishment of energy, physical stamina enhancement as well as strengthening the immune system to help fight off various illness. It has been known to calm the mind and help relieve sleeplessness for a more productive sleep cycle. Once given to babies to help indigestion, it is no longer recommended. However, in an adult it is quite effective in the relief of indigestion, and has also been used to treat cardiovascular disease as well as respiratory issues. Its earliest use was in applying it to the skin in a thin layer to disinfect and heal minor skin wounds and chapped lips.
Another obvious use is for a quick pick-me-up. It is absorbed easily into the system, thereby giving you a quicker energy burst than say a chocolate bar. However, watch that you don't use it too much as a replacement sweetener if you are watching your weight. 1 tablesgirl thingy of honey has 64 calories, compared with only 46 calories in one tablesgirl thingy of processed sugar!!!
When looking for the "perfect" honey, it becomes a matter of personal choice. Bear in mind that each variety changes with types of flowers that the bees took the nectar from. It is always a good idea, however, to purchase honey from a local beekeeper if possibe, as your immune system will then be able to fight off more of the "local ickies" , for instance allergies to local plant life, if you use a local honey than it will for a mass produced variety. You will also be more likely to know if the grower has used refined sugars to feed their bees, or used harmful pesticides....avoid those growers if you can.
Relaxing Honey Bath -
Put 2 oz. of honey in a glass with 5 drops of lavender oil. If the honey is too thick, heat it by placing the glass in warm water. Add 1 or 2 tbsp. of the honey-lavender mixture to your bathwater to help you relax, and combat insomnia.
