Ok, I know that we all think of goofy cats on warm summer days, however, it is also a lovely natural remedy for people as well. It's medicinal properties include relief or prevention of muscle spasms, increasing perspiration (for fever reduction) and {eww}flatulence relief. It is also known to ease menstrual and indigestion related cramps.
The most beneficial method of use is as a tea, to relieve headaches, or to ease childrens cold or flu infections. This herb may be purchased at most stores or grown at home, though that may prove to be a most difficult task if you own cats.
Preparation of the Tea:
1 cup boiling water
1 tsp. of dried and chopped catnip leaves
Steep the tea for 5-10 minutes. Cover during this time so that the oils infused in the tea don't evaporate. Strain well and sweeten to taste with honey.
To reduce fever:
2tsp dried catnip
1tsp dried vervain
Pour two cups of boiling water over the herbs, cover and steep for 5 to 10 min. Strain well. To promote the sweat to reduce the fever, sip the tea often.
For colds and flu:
1 tsp dried catnip
1/2 tsp. yarrow
1/2 tsp. angelica
Pour two cups boiling water over the herbs and allow them to steep for 5-10 minutes This tea may be sweetened with honey or lemon. Drink one cup every 1 to 2 hours to alleviate cold and flu symptoms.
For indigestion:
1 tsp catnip
1/2 tsp. fennel
1/2 tsp. lemon balm
Pour two cups of boiling water of the herbs, allowing them to steep for approx 5 minutes. Sweeten with honey. Sipping this tea will help to alleviate feelings of bloating and "over-fullness"
**NOTE**
Catnip should not be used by pregnant women. When being used with children, the dosage should be lowered based on age and weight. Speak to your pediatrician before using .[/color]
